Summer Classes 2012

LOU

After having two camps we were able to have some classes in crafts, math, choreography, English, hand embroidering and early childhood stimulation for the children that attend El Buen Pastor as well as some of the children in the community.  We also had a new evangelism school for the teenagers from Salt of the Earth to go to for 2 weeks and evangelize children in different parts of Peru.  It has been a very intense summer!

JANIS

It has certainly been a very busy summer.  I am sure the time has passed very quickly for you, the other instructors and the children. 

I think this has been one of our best summer yet.  I am particularly happy that everyone who has taught in the summer program also lives in the community. 

LOU
Yes, it has been a good summer.  One of the girls that taught has been Flor Guayac who had a problema with her health last year.  She was able to live with me and my wife and could study embroidery.  This permitted her to have knowledge in this and this summer (2012) she was able to teach others about what she had learned.

JANIS

Yes, I am very pleased with the opportunities provided to Flor.  She is such a sweet girl, and I know how much she loves God.  Her embroidery work is very pretty and demonstrates her obvious talent.  Of course, Flor is not the only one who has participated in our programs in the past and now volunteers or works as a summer instructor.

LOU

Yes, Flor has been the only one. Esther Leon has been teaching something that she enjoys:  drama and choreography to children from 8 to 11 years.  Esther has a lot of talent for this and most of all she enjoys the children.  As time passes she will be a possible future teacher in Sunday School (at El Buen Pastor).

JANIS
In the past six years or so I have had the opportunity to watch the kids in San Genaro grow and mature.  Esther is another one of those very special teenagers who have been growing in maturity and God’s wisdom.  I know that He has very special plans for her life, and I hope that she will contribute more in the future of our work.

LOU

Yes, Esther has grown in the things of God and now she helps us.  It is a pleasure to see her doing this.

JANIS

On a day to day basis it is sometimes difficult to see the results of work done.  Things may even appear frustrating or as if no progress is made.  However, with the passage of time, there is a different perspective of how individuals change and grow in new directions. 

After working together over these past few years I think we are both seeing the “fruit” of our work.  Each time I visit I return to the United States feeling positive about all God is doing there.

LOU

It’s true, and Yesenia has been able to help us in teaching the smallest children with early childhood education.  She has taken seriously her work and strengthened it.  I believe she has been able to use her job experience with small children for the children that come to Common Hope.

JANIS

Yes, I am very pleased with this new addition to the summer program.  It is an obvious need among the families, and we are fortunate she has the experience to assist. 

I am certain the mothers and children who attended learned a lot and enjoyed their time together.  And, I think it is something we can continue to plan to offer again in the future.

Clases de Verano 2012

LOU

Despues de tener 2 campamento pudimos tener talleres Manualidades, Matematicas, Coreografia, Ingles, Bordado y Estimulacion Temprana, para los chicos que asisten al Buen Pastor asi como algunos niños de la comunidad;  también tuvimos una nueva Escuela de Guerreros en la que las adolescentes de grupo La Sal de la Tierra pudieron ir por dos semanas y evangelizar a niños de diferentes partes de Peru. Ha sido un verano de mucha intensidad…

JANIS

Sin duda ha sido un verano muy ocupado. Estoy segura de que el tiempo ha pasado muy rápido para ti, los otros instructores y los niños.

Creo que este ha sido uno de nuestros mejores verano. Estoy particularmente contenta de que todos los que han enseñado en el programa de verano también viven en la comunidad.

Si, ha sido un buen verano. Una de las chicas que ha estado enseñando ha sido Flor Guayac, quien el año pasado tuvo un problema de salud. Ella pudo vivir con mi esposa y conmigo y pudo estudiar bordado. Esto le permitió a ella tener conocimientos en esto, y en este verano 2012 ella pudo enseñar a otros acerca de lo que aprendió.

JANIS
Sí, estoy muy satisfecha con las oportunidades que se ofrece a Flor. Ella es una chica dulce, y sé lo mucho que ama a Dios. Su trabajo de bordado es muy bonito y demuestra su talento evidente. Por supuesto, Flor no es la única que ha participado en nuestros programas en el pasado y ahora como voluntaria trabaja como instructura  de verano.

Si, Flor no ha sido la unica, Esther Leon ha estado enseñando algo que a ella le gusta y es enseñar actuación y coroegrafia a niños de 8 a 11 años. Esther tiene mucho talento para estos talleres y lo mejor de todo es que le gustan los niños. Con el pasar de los años ella será posiblemente una futura maestra en la Escuela Dominical.

JANIS

En los últimos seis años, más o menos he tenido la oportunidad de ver a los niños en San Genaro crecer y madurar. Esther es otra de esas adolescentes muy especiales que ha ido creciendo en madurez y sabiduría de Dios. Sé que Él tiene planes muy especiales para su vida, y espero que contribuya más en el futuro de nuestro trabajo.

Si, Esther ha crecido en las cosas de Dios y ahora nos apoya, es una gran alegria verla a ella haciendo eso.

JANIS

Del dia a día a veces es difícil ver los resultados del trabajo realizado. Las cosas incluso pueden parecer frustrante, o como si no se avanza. Sin embargo, con el paso del tiempo, hay una perspectiva diferente de cómo los individuos cambian y crecen en nuevas direcciones.

Después de trabajar juntos en estos últimos años, creo que ambos estamos viendo el "fruto" de nuestro trabajo. Cada vez que visito a Peru y regreso a los Estados Unidos tengo un sentimiento positivo acerca de todo lo que Dios está haciendo allí.

LOU

Es verdad  y Yesenia, ha podido ayudarnos en la enseñanza de los mas pequeños con Estimulacion temprana. Ella ha podido tmar en serio su trabajo y se ha esforzado. Creo que ella ha podido dar su experiencia de trabajo con pequeños para los niños que vienen a Common Hope.

JANIS
Sí, estoy muy contenta con esta nueva adición al programa de verano. Es evidente la necesidad de las familias, y tenemos la suerte de que ella tiene la experiencia para ayudarle.

Estoy seguro de que las madres y los niños que asistieron a aprendido mucho y disfrutado de su tiempo juntos. Y, creo que es algo que podemos seguir planificando y volverlo a ofrecer en el futuro.

After the surprise when the boy from the children’s camp won “best camper”, the camp for the teenagers arrived.  It was a challenge again to win a prize in either sports or “best camper”. 

But we went with this expectation. The teenagers had presented their report cards including one mother who hoped that maybe her son might be able to go but this student did not have good grades.  Rules are rules and this boy didn’t go.

JANIS

Hey, I am really glad you didn’t allow the one kid with bad grades to go.  Maybe he now understands the importance of his education.  And, the ones who did work hard have their reward, too! 

I am sure all were excited about the week ahead and maintained their hopes to at least do as well as the “little kids”.  The pressure was on!

LOU

It’s true there was pressure.  A girl named Maria had an accident playing and I was frightened about what happened to her, but the camp nurse was very profesional and helped her get better. 

Maria stopped playing but with the expectation that she needed to recover and participate again in the games.  The teenagers that went had fun and were excited about their participation.

JANIS

I’m glad that Maria is okay.  All teens enjoy the opportunity to leave home for a time and experience some freedom and Independence. 

I think there’s an added benefit since the kids are able to interact with other teenagers from all walks of life in various parts of Peru.  Rich kids…poor kids…kids from other cities and departments.  In camp they are on “equal ground” for a week.

LOU

Yes, both the rich and the poor (kids) are equal that week.  They have the same conditions.  And the kids from El Buen Pastor are able to have this experience.  Besides they (the camp directors) offered to Esther Leon an opportunity to work as one of their camp counselors in the following weeks.

But Esther had to return home with us.  We know our potential and it allowed us to go with (high) expectations to camp.

JANIS

What a great opportunity for Esther!  Perphas she will have another opportunity in the future to work at the camp in Canete.  But it is good to know that one of “our kids” is recognized for her abilities and this translates into job potential. 

However, the greatest benefit goes to Esther who receives the confirmation of her value and abilities outside of the poor community where she has lived all her life.  Her life is larger than before, and her self-concept is impacted.  Many of the kids I know from San Genaro seem to struggle with how they feel about themselves as worthy contributors to their community and society, in general.

LOU

Esther is a humble girl, sensitive and one that loves God.  This year (2012) she will finish her secondary education and maybe prepare to enter the university in 2013.  It is possible her time may be short and may not have the same opportunity next year but we know that she has enormous potential to do whatever she wants to do.  Esther is a role model for the rest of the girls and we hope she continues on her (current) path.

JANIS

All of the Leon family children have been good examples.  But, Esther, as the youngest has had the advantage of a good model from her older brothers and sister.  And, it is good to see that she is an example to the other youth and younger children.

I hope that we will have the advantage of her continued contribution in San Genaro, but I am certain her life will touch many others outside of the area. 

LOU

Yes, her example may include others outside of San Genaro. 

Besides Esther, Judith is another teenager of the same age whom I have known for years.  She has won two prizes, one of them for being the best in basketball and the second was for being the best camper.  Wow!  This year we had the best camper for children (Rivaldo Maza) and the best camper for teenagers. 

I was surprised when I heard Judith’s name because we have never won two“best camper” in the same year.  El coordinator of the camp told me “Lou, you are taking the best prizes each year! Congratulations!!!”, and I answered him “Yes, we came with our batteries charged!”

JANIS

Well, it has obviously been a great year for the youth, the children and Common Hope.  I am very pleased of all of their efforts as well as their behavior. 

As we look to the future, I think we will see God continue to work in the lives of all of these children and youth in the months and years to come.

Después de la sorpresa de que un niño que fue al Campamento ganara el premio de “mejor acampante”, vino la semana de Campamento para los Adolescentes.

Era un reto ganar de nuevo  un premio ya sea en deporte o “mejor acampante”. Pero íbamos con esa expectativa. Los Adolescentes que fueron presentaron sus libretas de notas e incluso una mamá quiso que su hijo pueda ir, pero éste no tenía buenas notas, pero las reglas, son las reglas y este chico no fue.

El lunes 23 de enero los Adolescentes se presentaron en la casa Common Hope y de allí tomamos el taxi para luego tomar el bus a Cañete. Todos estaban contentos y tenían la expectativa de divertirse y quizá ganar un nuevo premio para nuestra organización.

JANIS

Hola, estoy muy contenta de que no hayas permitido que el chico niño que tiene malas calificaciones vaya. Tal vez ahora comprenda la importancia de su educación. Y, los que sí estudiaron arduo tienen su recompensa, ahora!

Estoy segura que todos estaban emocionados por la semana y mantuvieron sus esperanzas de por lo menos hacer las cosas tan bien como los "niños pequeños" hicieron. La presión estaba en ellos!

LOU

Es verdad, hubo presión y una chica llamada Maria, tuvo un accidente jugando, yo me asuste por lo que le paso, pero la enfermera del campamento fue muy profesional y ella la ayudo a recuperarse.

Maria termino golpeada, pero con la expectativa de recuperarse y participar de nuevo en los juegos. Los chicos que llevamos, se divirtieron y le pusieron emoción a su participación.

JANIS

Me alegro de que María está bien. Todos los adolescentes disfrutan de la oportunidad de salir de casa por un tiempo y experimentar algo de la libertad y la independencia.

Creo que hay un beneficio adicional ya que los chicos son capaces de interactuar con otros adolescentes de todos los ámbitos de la vida de diversas partes del Perú. Los chicos ricos... los chicos pobres... los niños de otras ciudades y departamentos. En el campamento están en "igualdad de condiciones " por una semana.

LOU

Si, ricos y pobres son iguales en una semana, están en las mismas condiciones. Y los chicos de El Buen Pastor pueden tener esa experiencia. Además ofrecieron a Esther León trabajar como consejera en el Campamento, las siguientes semanas.

Pero Esther tuvo que regresar a casa con todos nosotros. Sabemos de nuestro potencial y eso nos permitió ir con expectativa al Campamento.

JANIS

¡Qué gran oportunidad para Esther! Quizá tendrá otra oportunidad en el futuro para trabajar en el campamento en Cañete. Pero es bueno saber que uno de "nuestros chicos", es reconocido por sus habilidades y esto se traduce en un potencial empleo.

Sin embargo, el mayor beneficio para  Esther es que recibe la confirmación de su valor y habilidades fuera de la comunidad pobre, donde ha vivido toda su vida. Su vida es más relacionada que antes, y su concepto de sí misma es afectado. Muchos de los chicos  que conozco de San Genaro parecen luchar con cómo se sienten acerca de sí mismos como colaboradores valiosos a su comunidad y la sociedad en general.

Esther es una chica humilde, sencilla y que ama a Dios. Ella en este año 2012 termina su secundaria y quizá  este preparándose para entrar a la universidad en el 2013. Quizá su tiempo sea corto o no tenga la misma oportunidad de participar como consejera en el campamento el próximo año, pero sabemos que ella tiene un enorme potencial para lograr lo que quiere.  Esther es modelo para las demás chicas y esperamos que ella pueda seguir por ese camino.

JANIS

Todos los hijos de la familia León han sido buenos ejemplos. Pero, Esther, como la más joven ha tenido la ventaja de buenos modelos en sus hermanos mayores. Y, es bueno ver que ella es un ejemplo para otros jóvenes y niños más pequeños.

Espero que vamos a tener la ventaja de su continua contribución en San Genaro, pero estoy segura de que su vida va a tocar a otros muchos fuera de la zona.

Si, su ejemplo puede abarcar a otros fuera de San Genaro.

Además de Esther, Judith otra adolescente a la cual conozco años, gano dos premios, uno de ellos fue por ser la mejor en basquetbol y el segundo premio fue por ser la mejor acampante. Wow, este año tuvimos al mejor acampante en niños (Rivaldo Maza) y acampante en adolescente.

Me sorprendí cuando escuche el nombre de Judith, porque nunca habíamos ganado dos “Mejor Acampante” en el mismo año. El coordinador del campamento me dijo “Lou, ustedes se están llevando los mejores premios cada año, Felicitaciones!!!” y le conteste “Si, estamos con las baterías puestas”.

JANIS

Bueno, evidentemente, ha sido un gran año para los jóvenes, niños y Common Hope. Estoy muy contenta de todos sus esfuerzos, así como sus comportamientos de ellos.

Al mirar hacia el futuro, creo que vamos a ver a Dios continuando trabajando en las vidas de todos estos niños y jóvenes en los meses y años venideros. "
