As we approach our 5^th year of the Christmas Store in Peru, I have realized that some of the kids we have served are now out of high school. Some of them now are helping teach classes at El Buen Pastor on Sundays. Or some of these young people have younger siblings who still participate each December in either the Christmas Store or attend the shoe distribution with Buckner International. What I really like is to see the older youth are volunteering to serve in a number of ways in the community.

LOU

Yes, it is very important for me and for Rocio Conde, the director of the Sunday School, to see youth beginning to teach in Sunday School. For example, we have Alex, Sandra and Judith besides Yoselin.

JANIS

I think that is wonderful. The truth is that we need to be training the future generation of teachers and tutors will be able to carry forward the work that has been done so faithfully by you, Rocio and the other individuals working with the kids in San Genaro. Tell me something about each of them. Yoselin just began teaching as a tutor with us. What is her story?

LOU

Yoselin Rivera is a young person who is 18 years old. I have known her since she was a little girl. Her grandmother took her to Sunday School and she has grown up in the church. Her heart is very receptive. But her parents are not very receptive to the things of God. For years they have had different illnesses and because of this have not had regular jobs. Yoselin es their oldest daughter, and she finished high school last year and is studying computers. She participated in the Christmas Store from its beginning and this is her last year to benefit from it.

JANIS

I enjoy so much learning the indvidual stories of the children and youth. How is Yoselin doing in her work as tutor for Common Hope? She works with the younger children three days a week, right?

LOU

Yes, she works three days each week and like all beginnigns she has done it slowly but little by little she will have the ability to do it better. Her job is with younger children and she has the patience to teach them.

JANIS
You mentioned Alex as one of the new teachers in El Buen Pastor. Tell me more about him.

LOU
Alex is 26 years old. I have known him for years, he atended Sunday School at El Buen Pastor since he was a child and teenager. He participated in various parts in Christmas pagent. But then he had a time when he stopped coming to the church but this past year he has been reconciled with God. Now he attends the youth meeting at Peniel (my church where I belong). But he would attend the Sunday School class that Rocio teaches. Rocio sees him as someone who she could trust with a class and now Alex is a teacher in El Buen Pastor for youth ages 12 to 14. Alex has helped buy the toys for the Christmas Store in past years.

JANIS
That’s great to know Alex has matured and made decisión to the benefit of himself and others. And, as he learned in years past by attending Rocio’s class, he is now in a position to serve others. He can be an example to other younger children who can benefit from what he has learned. There are always times in our lives when we have to stop and determine how we will live our faith and our lives. When a person can make this decisión for themselves then they live more authentically.

LOU

Yes, Alex is living his life more authentically and this benefits us. Now because of his work he can’t help buy gifts for the Christmas Store with the other teachers but his help as a teacher is a great benefit.

JANIS

I see both Judith and Sandra whenever I visit Peru. Tell me how they are doing in their lives? Both are currently teachers in El Buen Pastor now aren’t they?

LOU

Sandra is the same as Alex. She atended Sunday School since she was 11 years old. Now she is 26 years old. She always participated in choreographies and always was available to help. At one time she turned away from God and had a baby. She has returned to the ways of God and takes BIble clases so she can learn more and wants to work for God. Sandra never received a toy through the Christmas Store but last year she volunteered. This year she is already a teacher and will have an important job.

Judith is 17 years old. She has studied to be a teacher in pre-school. I have seen Judith since she was a little girl. Today she participates as a Sunday School teacher and is an integral part of the theater group (Salt of the Earth). Judith has participated en four past Christmas Stores as a recipient. This year she will volunteer.

JANIS

It is good to hear the personal stories. And it is gratifying to know that those who have been participants in the Christmas Store are now learning ways to give back to their own community. They will become the examples for the younger children and a future generation of teachers for the children in Sunday School. And, this is how things should go as time passes. Each of us has a part to play in the lives of these children. And, when our own time ends there will be others, many others, who can continue the work begun through us.

LOU

Yes, you’re right. There are the examples of Yoselin, Alex, Sandra and Judith. We are seeing a future for new teachers and it will be good for our work. God has been good to give us local people to help in our ministry.

JANIS

You’re right. It is God who calls who He wants to serve. It is up to us individually to respond to His call. I am convinced there is something He wants all of us to do in some capacity in the world. Whether in Peru or Africa or Asia…or the United States there is great need and opportunity before us. It will always be a mystery as to why God has chosen to do His work through humans. Certainly part of the reason is because we can act as examples to demonstrate His love for everyone but also because He is able to work in our lives more effectively.

LOU

Yes we are called to serve Him with everything we do. We must give to Him all of our effort our call to serve Him at this time in San Genaro.

JANIS

I am looking forward to my visit at the end of the month. It won’t be long until the 5th Christmas Store in Peru occurs and there is much activity already beginning in preparation.

A medida que nos acercamos a nuestro 5ª año de la Tienda de Navidad en el Peru, me he dado cuenta que algunos chicos a los cuales hemos servido ahora están fuera de la escuela secundaria. Algunos de ellos ahora están ayudando a dar clases en El Buen Pastor los domingos. O algunos de estos jóvenes tienen hermanos menores que aún participan cada mes de diciembre, ya sea en la Tienda de Navidad o asistir a la distribución de calzado con Buckner Internacional. Lo que me gusta es ver a los jóvenes mayores de esa edad que se ofrecen como voluntarios para servir en una serie de formas en la comunidad.

Si, es muy importante para mi y para Rocio Conde, la directora de la Escuela Dominical, ver a jovenes personas comenzando a enseñar en el Escuela Dominical. Por ejemplo tenemos a Alex, Sandra y Judith además de Yoselin.

JANIS

Creo que es maravilloso. La verdad es que tenemos que formar la futura generación de maestros y tutores que serán capaces de llevar adelante la obra que se ha hecho tan fielmente por ti, Rocio y las personas que trabajan con los niños en San Genaro. Dime algo sobre cada uno de ellos. ¿Comenzo Yoselin a dar clases como profesor particular con nosotros. ¿Cuál es su historia?

LOU
Yoselin Rivera es una señorita de 18 años, a la cual la conozco desde que ella era niña. Su abuelita la traia a la Escuela Dominical y ella ha crecido en la iglesia. El corazón de ella es muy receptivo. Pero sus padres no son muy apegados a las cosas de Dios. Ellos han estado por años con diferentes enfermedades por lo que no tenían un trabajo regular. Yoselin es su hija mayor y ella, termino la secundaria el año pasado y esta estudiando computación. Participo en la Tienda de Navidad desde que se inicio y esta es su ultima Tienda.

JANIS

Me gusta mucho aprender las historias individuales de los niños y jóvenes. ¿Cómo esta Yoselin haciendo su trabajo como tutor en Common Hope? Ella trabaja con los niños más pequeños tres días a la semana, ¿verdad?

LOU

Si, ella trabaja tres dias a la semana, como todo comienzo, ella lo esta hacienda lento, pero poco a poco ella tendrá la habilidad para hacerlo mejor. Su trabajo es con niños pequeños y tiene la paciencia para enseñarles.

JANIS

Tu mencionaste a Alex como uno de los maestros nuevos en El Buen Pastor. Quiero saber más sobre él.

LOU

Alex tiene 26. Lo conozco desde años, asistia a la Escuela Dominical en el Buen Pastor desde niño y adolescente. Participo en varias actuaciones en La Navidad. Pero luego tuvo un tiempo que dejo de venir a la iglesia, pero desde el año pasado se reconcilio con el Señor. Ahora asiste a las reuniones de jóvenes de la iglesia Peniel (mi iglesia de cual yo provengo). Pero asistia a la Escuela Dominical en la clase de Rocio Conde. Pero Rocio vio en él a alguien quien pudo confiar una clase, y hoy Alex es maestro de Escuela Dominical en el Buen Pastor de niños púberes de 12 a 14. Alex ha ayudado a comprar los juguetes para las pasadas Tienda de Navidad.

JANIS
Eso es bueno conocer que Alex ha madurado y ha tomado la decisión en beneficio de sí mismo y otros. Y, como ha aprendido en los últimos años, asistiendo a clases de Rocio, esta ahora en condiciones de servir a los demás. El puede ser un ejemplo para otros niños más jóvenes que puedan beneficiarse de lo que ha aprendido. Siempre hay veces en nuestras vidas cuando tenemos que parar y determinar cómo vamos a vivir nuestra fe y nuestras vidas. Cuando una persona puede tomar esta decisión por sí mismos, entonces viven más auténticamente.

LOU

Si Alex esta viviendo su vida mas auténticamente y eso nos beneficia a todos. Ahora, por motivos de trabajo, él no puede hacer las compras para la Tienda de Navidad con las otras maestras, pero su ayuda como maestro es de gran beneficio.

JANIS

Veo tanto a Judith y Sandra cada vez que visito al Perú. Dime cómo ellas están en sus vidas? Ambas son maestras en la actualidad en El Buen Pastor, ahora no?

LOU

Sandra es como el caso de Alex, asistio a la Escuela Dominical desde que tenia 11 años. Ahora ella tiene 26 años. Siempre ella participaba en las coreografias y siempre estaba dispuesta a ayudar. En un momento de su vida ella, se alejo de Dios y tuvo una bebe. Ella ha regresado a los caminos de Dios y tiene clases Biblicas, para aprender mas y quiere trabajar para El. Sandra nunca recibió ningún juguete de la Tienda de Navidad. El año pasado, ella participo como voluntaria. Y en este año, ella ya es maestra y tendrá un trabajo mas importante.

Judith, es una chica de 17 años. Ella ha estudiado para ser maestra en Educación Inicial (pre-school). Yo la he visto a Judith desde que era una niña. Hoy en dia participa como maestra en la Escuela Dominical y es parte integrante del Grupo de teatro del Buen Pastor (La Sal de la Tierra). Judith ha participado en las cuatro Tiendas de Navidad pasadas como beneficiaria. Este año, ella será voluntaria.

JANIS

Es bueno escuchar las historias personales. Y es gratificante saber que aquellos que han sido los participantes en la Tienda de Navidad están aprendiendo la manera de devolver a su propia comunidad. Se convertirán en los ejemplos para los más pequeños y una futura generación de maestros para los niños en la escuela dominical. Y, así es como las cosas deben ir con el paso del tiempo. Cada uno de nosotros tiene un papel que desempeñar en la vida de estos niños. Y, cuando nuestro tiempo termina habrá otros, muchos otros, que pueden continuar el trabajo iniciado a través de nosotros.

LOU

Si tienes razon, alli estan los ejemplos en Yoselin, Alex, Sandra y Judith. Asi como ellos estamos viendo a futuro una nueva maestra, que será bueno para nuestro trabajo. Dios ha sido bueno en darnos a personas locales para ayudar en su obra.

JANIS

Tienes razón. Es Dios quien llama a quien Él para servir. Depende de nosotros en forma individual para responder a su llamada. Estoy convencido de que es algo que El quiere que todos hagamos de alguna manera en el mundo. Ya sea en el Perú, en África, Asia ... o los Estados Unidos, hay una gran necesidad y la oportunidad que tenemos ante nosotros. Siempre será un misterio por qué Dios ha escogido para hacer su trabajo a través de los seres humanos. Sin duda una de las razones es porque puede servir de ejemplo para demostrar su amor para todos, pero también porque es capaz de trabajar en nuestras vidas con mayor eficacia.

Si estamos llamado a servirle a El con todo lo que podemos hacer. Le debemos a El todas nuestras fuerzas y nuestro llamado en este tiempo, es en San Genaro.

Yo estoy esperando mi visita a finales del mes. No pasará mucho tiempo hasta la 5ta. Tienda de Navidad en el Perú ocurra y ya hay mucha actividad listo para comenzar la preparación.
