LOU
It has been a good summer here in Chorrillos, Lima. At the end of the year we did not know what we were going to have so that the kids would do to stay busy during their vacation.
But the kids have been able to be in two camps besides having a visit with Sergio Ramos and Randy Daniels, leaders of Buckner International International who hope to have a better alliance with Common Hope in the work they will be doing in the future here in San Genaro.
Besides that Giugliana from Buckner Peru has given them instruction on how to read. And this was not all, they had classes in jewelry-making, sewing, English and math. And at the end of each week we had trips to the beach or some other recreation activity.
JANIS
Yes, it has been a great summer. The camps went very well, I think. I am glad the kids had to provide passing grades for the school year. For the first time, they are learning that education has a value and is the road to new experiences…and a better life. The relationship with Buckner is very gratifying. Tell me about the emphasis on literacy each week? What is Giugliana from Buckner doing each week? LOU
You know that every December Buckner Peru brings volunteers to provide shoes to the children and part of their program is to bring Giugliana who is a worker with Buckner Peru. She has wonderful abilities communicating with the kids through theater. She has had a class each Wednesday with children ages 7 to 11 and applies her knowledge of expression to teach the lesson. Giugliana does this so that the kids might have an interest in reading because it is known that in Peru people don’t like to read. JANIS
I think that is a wonderful idea. The children listen so intently to her when she is there for the Christmas Store. She is amazing! And what a great way to interest the children in reading! It is my understanding that families do not encourage their children to read. Why does this happen? LOU
This happens because parents have little ability t oread or don’t have an education which developed their reading ability. In Peru few people read. JANIS
Then we have a great opportunity to open a whole new world to the kids through reading. As you know yourself, books can introduce you to new ideas and places without leaving your house. However, I think it will take some time for them to see the value of reading. Tell about the summer classes that you and Choya have taught this summer? It always amazes me that Peruvian children will attend a MATH class during their vacation time! LOU
Yes, reading can introduce you to a world of adventures but many times the children think this is boring. But this is not accurate. Reading a book shows how to speak and write better. The summer classes have been good because they have had the interest of the children. Choya has had various students this summer. Yes, attending a class in math during summer is strange but the same kids request this. Through this I imagine they want to reinforce their abilities in numbers. JANIS
Well it is commendable that they even ask for the math class! It’s a shame they don’t see reading as an adventure. But I suppose there are so many other more immediate concerns in their lives that reading is not a priority.Maybe over time their interest will change. Perhaps if we begin activities with small children that include reading would help build this into their lives at an early age.Choya has instructed some of the girls in how to make bracelets this summer. How has this activity progressed for them? It is something young girls enjoy here. LOU
Yes, the reading and math are important for them. But many times they don’t see this as a priority. And I believe that reading and math are fundamental parts in a person’s studies. In regards to Choya and her jewelry-making classes I can tell you that she and the students are making necklaces, bracelets and earrings. They want to donate their work for the auction (for the 2010 Christmas Store in Peru). I know they don’t have all the experience to do this but their intentions are good. And I hope that VRBC and the youth can see the jewelry they have made.JANIS
Yes, I agree. Reading and math would be fundamental areas of education. I hope we can make an impact slowly in these areas. I think the donation of the jewelry is a really special addition to the auction for the Christmas Store. That could be one of our most popular items! Ending the year with a celebration is a great idea! It is hard to believe that the summer is over so soon and classes begin again in March.
LOU
Yes, the jewelry making (the process of making jewelry with different kinds of ornamentation) is one of the preferred activities of the girls this summer. And the donation of some of these to the auction shows that the girls want to do their part to benefit the Christmas Store in 2010. You’re right. The summer is finished for them and the classes in school will begin the first Monday of March. It is the beginning of a new school year. JANIS
Every year I think we are able to add to the program for the students. And, slowly our group of active kids is growing. It takes time for change to occur, and we may not see the true effects of our efforts for months or years. But I am convinced that every small change results in subtle changes to the total system. As long as we continue see small changes life will never quite be the same as before we began. You and Choya have done a great job this summer!
