Christmas Store in Peru: Celebrating Year 5!

JANIS

December 2010 marks the fifth year of the Christmas Store in Peru! This year 260 children were served with a gift for Christmas, new shoes, and socks and a t-shirt.For the first time more than one member from Valley Ranch Baptist Church, who partners with Igl. El Buen Pastor in Chorrillos, came to work side-by-side with Peruvian volunteers during the final days of preparation. Jim Mustain, associate pastor, Kirk Jordan, Nancy Rockwell and Lee Tanner joined Janis Townsend in assisting members of El Buen Pastor and other local volunteers who had worked for weeks in anticipation of the event on Saturday, December 4-5.Buckner International volunteers who have normally joined on the second day to distribute shoes and present a story/craft were not able to be present in 2010.Hosever, a group of El Buen Pastor youth, called Salt of the Earth presented drama and choreographies to entertain the children.LOU

The teachers in Sunday School, participated in the purchase of gifts and t-shirts, to be able to give to the kids at the Christmas Store. As I have told you before, it begins the first Saturday of October and ends the 20th of November. Each Saturday we walk and walk but this service is in order to see the faces of many children who would not have a gift at Christmas.

Yes, everyone works so hard for many weeks in advance of La Tienda.Over the time this event has been held it has been good for me to watch the growth of so many individuals in their volunteer roles.

And, I am glad to see the youth become actively involved in the preparations and even teaching the younger children in Sunday School. They will be the future leaders in the community.

LOU

Yes, you could see the youth helping on December 4th at the Christmas Store taking information from the parents, and like them, we have a teacher (who is a former recipient of the Christmas Store) that is now working with the smallest children. Her name is Judith. On the 5th of December the members of the group “Salt of the Earth” put on a presentation as a show for the kids. That afternoon Buckner was not able to come (as in the past) to present a show, but we replaced them and it went very well.

JANIS

Yes, I think Buckner now has some serious competition for our entertainment! I was very impressed and pleased with all the hard work the group had done in preparation. I know they were all nervous and wanted to do a good time. And, we were not disappointed! They are incredibly talented and have much to offer others through their demonstration of faith and love for God. I hope to see more of them in the future!
